چکیده

X-ray microanatysis has revealed that the sodium content of the stomatal guard cells of Aster tripolium remains much lower than that of other leaf cells when the plants are grown at high salinity. Large amounts of sodium did, in contrast, accumulate in epidermal and subsidiary cells, and particularly in the mesophyll tissue, suggesting that a mechanism exists to limit the extent of its entry into guard cells. Even in plants grown at high salinity, the content of potassium was much higher than that of sodium in the guard cells, consistent with the view that this is a major ion involved in determining stomatal movements in this

Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration ameliorates effects of NaCl salinity on photosynthesis and leaf structure of Aster tripolium L.

This study investigated the interaction of NaCl-salinity and elevated atmospheric CO(2) concentration on gas exchange, leaf pigment composition, and leaf ultrastructure of the potential cash crop halophyte Aster tripolium. The plants were irrigated with five different salinity levels (0, 25, 50, 75, 100% seawater salinity) under ambient and elevated (520 ppm) CO(2). Under saline conditions (amb...

Adaptive responses to high salinity of two subspecies of Aster tripolium on different nitrogen sources

The effects of NaCl salinity, different N-sources (nitrate or ammonium), as well as pH on the major enzymes of N-metabolism and total antioxidant capacity were investigated in two subspecies of Aster tripolium L., A. tripolium ssp. tripolium, a maritime halophyte, and A. tripolium ssp. pannonicus, endemic on the continental alkaline salty meadows. Differences in their biochemical and physiologi...

ALA-Induced Flavonols Accumulation in Guard Cells Is Involved in Scavenging H2O2 and Inhibiting Stomatal Closure in Arabidopsis Cotyledons

5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), a new plant growth regulator, can inhibit stomatal closure by reducing H2O2 accumulation in guard cells. Flavonols are a main kind of flavonoids and have been proposed as H2O2 scavengers in guard cells. 5-aminolevulinic acid can significantly improve flavonoids accumulation in plants. However, whether ALA increases flavonols content in guard cells and the role of fl...

Drought, but not salinity, determines the apparent effectiveness of halophytes colonized by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi.

The halophytes Plantago maritima, Aster tripolium, Artemisia santonicum, Puccinellia limosa, Festuca pseudovina and Lepidium crassifolium from two different saline soils of the Hungarian steppe were examined for colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). The salt aster (A. tripolium) and the sea plantain (P. maritima) were examined more thoroughly by recording root colonization paramet...

Water relations, pigment stabilization, photosynthetic abilities and growth improvement in salt stressed rice plants treated with exogenous potassium nitrate application

Potassium is a major nutrient which may play an important role in many processes such as ion homeostasis in plant cells and osmotic adjustment of guard cells during stomatal opening and closing. Pathumthani 1 (PT1) rice has been reported as being a salt sensitive cultivar and has been selected as a model plant in this study to investigate the possibility of improving the osmotic potential, pigm...
